Back to the Future: Why Troy King Is Backing Ron Sparks for Alabama Agriculture Commissioner

Staff Writer October 21, 2026
Former Republican Attorney General Troy King and Democratic Commissioner Ron Sparks sat down for an exclusive interview on the BCS. State of Alabama podcast, hosted by Christopher M. Penks, owner of the Alabama Political Contributor website, alongside co-host Brandon Mosley. The discussion centered on King's high-profile, cross-party endorsement of Sparks and why stepping away from political tribalism is essential for fixing Alabama's broken systems.
Going Back to the Future to Fix Broken Systems
When pressed about critics who claim that turning back to past leadership is a step backward, Troy King forcefully pushed back. He argued that voters are not forced to choose between a nostalgic way-back
machine and accepting a broken present.
"We don't need change just to say we changed something; we need change to make things better. And sometimes things were better before they got broken... To say your choice is go back in a wayback machine or be content with the broken present, that's not much of a choice." — Troy King
Sparks reinforced that message, pointing out that his campaign is about restoring vital public services—such as gas pump inspectors, consumer protection labs, and rigorous food safety enforcement—that have deteriorated over the past decade and a half.
Rejecting Tribalism and Protecting Alabama Families
King addressed the fierce pushback he has received from within Republican circles, noting that hyper-partisan tribalism has crippled effective government. He pointed to his and Sparks' history of working together during the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill as definitive proof that effective governance transcends party labels.
Sparks outlined his aggressive policy platform designed to provide financial relief for Alabama farmers and working families:
Tax Relief: Slashing the 1.5% sales tax on farm equipment to inject $40 million back into the pockets of producers.
Cost-Share Initiatives: Allocating $20 million from potential gaming or lottery revenues to support local farmers with skyrocketing operational costs.
Consumer Protection: Rebuilding the state's inspection infrastructure to combat price gouging and ensure consumer safety at the grocery store and the gas pump.
