This month marks the passing of one of the most beloved, iconic figures in Alabama political history. Her slogan, an embodiment  of how the Alabama people felt about her, said it all. " We Love Lucy."

Lucy Baxley, a true public servant, loved the people of Alabama. And the Alabama people loved her back. Electing her to three state offices and winning four out of six elections. Lucy became a trail blazer for female politicians in this state. Opening the path for others who aspired to seek higher office.

Lucy, did things her way and never back down from a challenge. She once closed a session of the legislature that had been set to begin at one p.m. When her watch said 1:05 and a qorum had not been met she banged her gavel closing it out. She was a stickler for being on time.

What might have been had Lucy sought re-election to the Lt. Governors office in 2006. She would have been the favorite going in to 2010 governor's race. But Lucy put the party above herself and heeded to the wishes of party leaders and ran for governor in that year. She secured the nomination but fell to incumbent Bob Riley in the fall.

Lucy had a sharp wit and always had a quick come back to an opponent that made a dig at her. I spit Dr. Pepper out laughing during one of these exchanges when Bob Riley told her " There you go again." Without missing a beat Lucy replied "Governor Riley let's get one thing straight. You are no Ronald Reagan." Another funny back and forth was when Twinkle Cavanaugh called her a career politician.and Lucy fired back " if you won more races maybe you would be a career politician. Got to love that razor sharp tounge.

Lucy was one of a kind and is sorely missed. There will never be another like her. Her opponents never had a bad word to say about her. A testament to her honesty and integrity. Thanks for the memories Lucy. Montgomery needs more people like you. And still today in Alabama "We Love Lucy."
