The race for Alabama Attorney General is heating up, and Blount County District Attorney Pam Casey is positioning herself as the only candidate with the "in the trenches" experience required for the state's top law enforcement office. In a recent interview, Casey detailed her two-decade career as a prosecutor and why she believes voters should prioritize courtroom experience over administrative or judicial backgrounds.
A Career Defined by the Courtroom
Elected as the youngest female District Attorney in Alabama's history at age 28, Casey has served Blount County since 2010. Unlike her opponents, she emphasizes that she has personally tried jury trials, prosecuted capital murder cases, and argued before the Alabama Supreme Court.
"You would not hire a principal at a school who’s never taught," Casey remarked, drawing a parallel to the role of Attorney General. She argues that her experience working directly with victims and law enforcement provides a perspective that cannot be learned from a textbook or an administrative desk.
Protecting Alabama’s Children
A central pillar of Casey's campaign is the protection of children. She discussed her extensive work prosecuting child predators and her support for the recently passed Child Death Penalty Act. Casey was instrumental in advocating for the inclusion of sexual torture in the act, ensuring that those who commit the most heinous crimes against children face the strictest penalties.
She also issued a stern warning to parents about the dangers of unsupervised internet and social media access, comparing a smartphone in a child's hands to an unsupervised firearm.
Navigating State and Federal Challenges
Addressing broader state issues, Casey shared her views on:
The Department of Corrections: She emphasized the need for more correctional officers and better pay for law enforcement, rather than allowing federal mandates to force the release of violent offenders.
Illegal Immigration: Casey noted that while state officials can work with federal agencies like ICE, the ultimate authority for removal remains at the federal level.
Gaming and Gambling: Casey highlighted her independence, noting she has not accepted money from out-of-state gambling interests and has a track record of prosecuting illegal gaming operations.
The Fighter Alabama Needs
As the May 19th primary approaches, Casey is asking voters for four years to prove her capability. She frames herself as a fighter who is ready to draft her own legal briefs and lead federal-level legal challenges personally, rather than simply signing onto work done by other states.
With a record built on violent crime and capital litigation, Pam Casey is betting that Alabama voters want an Attorney General who knows exactly what happens inside a courtroom.
