Recently in Mountain Brook, Alabama, stale cigar smoke hung in the air as the blurry-eyed inhabitants of a "war room" looked on. Doug Jones and Tabitha Isner—much like Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun hunkered down in a Berlin bunker in the winter of 1945—plotted the last stand of the white liberal wing of the Alabama Democratic Party.
Jones, who is reminiscent of the German leader's final days, looks much more advanced in age than his 71 years. He seems to have gotten his wish of having an all-white slate of candidates to run next November. Isner, along with the rest of the Democratic Party hierarchy, looks at Jones as the "Fuhrer" of a rising organization, when in reality, the party is as impotent as the Nazis were in 1945.
With far-left zealot Josh Moon—akin to Joseph Goebbels as Propaganda Minister—pushing the notion that Jones is the only one who can save the party, the inner circle is ramping up its incessant attacks against Dr. Will Boyd. According to an unnamed source close to the campaign, they are calling Boyd a "divider" for not dropping out of the race and rallying around Jones.
A cult of personality has developed around the former Senator. This party is no longer the Democrats; they are the "Doug-o-crats." They have fallen in line behind the charlatan only because of his victory against Roy Moore in the 2017 special Senate election. But had the Republican Party not abandoned Moore like a man with the plague, and had "RINO" Senator Richard Shelby not led the witch hunt against Judge Moore, Jones would never have ascended to the Senate. And let us not forget: he was beaten like a rented mule three years later by Senator Tuberville, despite outspending him five to one.
The white liberals, making their last stand much like the German defense of Berlin, have conjured up another "Golden Boy" from the past by running former Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks, hoping he will turn out voters for Jones.
Jones and Isner have yet to bring Joe Reed into the fold. This "dynamic duo," for lack of a better word, is cutting off its nose to spite its face. They are banking on Jones carrying the Black vote because of his past and his ability to overwhelm opponents with money, but they are underestimating the other candidates in this race. There are not enough white liberals in Mountain Brook, Vestavia, and Huntsville to propel Jones to victory in the Democratic primary.
Come next May, do not be surprised to see Senator Jones—whom the Democrats have made a deity perched high above the field on a house of cards—come crashing down. The "Doug-o-crats" will end like Custer at Little Bighorn; Doug Jones will be a footnote in Alabama political history, and hopefully, Josh Moon will sit down somewhere and shut up.
