TwoDemocratic candidates are running from Alabama's 2nd Congressional District Drop Out

The crowded race for the Democratic nomination for Alabama's 2nd Congressional District is less crowded after two candidates dropped out. Dr. Brian Gary, a Montgomery surgeon, retired Dec. 13, said Sheena Gamble, director of communications for the Alabama Democratic Party. The Alabama Education Association's top official, Darryl Sinkfield, announced his retirement Wednesday, the Alabama Political Reporter reported. Sinkfield said he decided the campaign would take him away from other duties and responsibilities. After the cancellation, 11 candidates remain in the Democratic race. There are eight Republican candidates. Gary and Sinkfield were undisputed long shots in a Democratic race that includes five members of the Alabama Legislature. The 2nd District race drew an unusually large number of candidates after a three-judge federal court approved a new map that changed it from a heavily Republican district to one where Democrats have a chance to win. The area that covered southeastern Alabama now stretches from the Georgia line to the Mississippi line, with Montgomery at the northern end and much of Mobile at the southern end. The primaries are March 5th. There are 21 candidates running in Alabama's second Congressional District.
