Things come in threes

By Christopher M Peeks May 29, 2025

They say things come in threes. Just a few months ago, Chip Beeker resigned his position, paving the way for his son to take his seat. A few days ago, Twinkle Cavanaugh left to take a position in the U.S.D.A. Now we have learned Jeremy Oden tried to become the ADEM Director. Interestingly, in a span of a few months, all three commissioners attempted or did leave their office.

Things that make you go hmm. Commissioner Beeker's resignation, on the surface, a man in his 80s, makes sense. But does it? He only attended one meeting a month. Why give up a cushy $110,000-a-year job with a state car, medical insurance, plus other perks?

What about Twinkle Cavanaugh? Her desire for higher office is no secret. She ramped up her campaign machine here recently, speaking to numerous clubs in anticipation of a lieutenant governor's run in 2026. Now, is she in essence ending her political career?

Oden too? He has started his re-election campaign. Why is he trying to get out?

I am reminded of another old saying too: Rats jump from a sinking ship. Is it just a coincidence that all three are leaving the PSC? Or is there something we are not being told? Is there something more under the surface? Are they trying to escape something? Time will tell. At the very least, I would wager Matrix's internal polls show some bad numbers.

Beeker and Cavanaugh got the easy way out. They will no longer have to face the ire of the voters. Lastly, one other famous line comes to mind: and then there was one.
