Alabama's Tax Rebate

By Chris Peeks December 18, 2023

When thinking about the rebate check, I'm reminded of the biblical story of The Rich Man and Lazarus, about how Lazarus had to eat the Rich man's scraps. Well, the citizens of the state of Alabama just got fed some scraps.

Everyone is excited about getting their measly little 150$ check and forget about how this all started in the first place and about how our government stuck it to us again by none other than Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth.

During the Ivey Administration, state coffers have been overfilling from the record amount of tax revenue brought in. Gov. Ivey wanted to give the people back some of their money with a 750$ stimulus check. But the Lt. Gov. and some of his legislature's cohorts nixed that check by 600$.

Saying that, instead of a rebate, Ainsworth declared we needed to reform our tax structure. Ok fine. Were we lowering state income taxes, reducing property taxes, or eliminating the gas tax? No.

He is pounding his chest about a 350 million dollar tax cut. I have no idea where he arrived at that number that amounts to literally pennies on the dollar. He cut the grocery tax from 4 cents to 2 cents. Now, how long will it take people to make up that 600-dollar difference? And will they even notice saving a few pennies here and there on groceries?

Today, with people struggling, 750 dollars would have amounted to a much-needed vacation, school clothes, or just an emergency fund. But no, the lieutenant governor thought it would be better for you to save a couple of cents at the market. Here is an even better idea: why not do both?

So why did the Lt. Gov not want to give the citizens back some of their money? Something tells me there will be a lot of pet projects built in his ally's districts over the next few years to buy votes to secure the Governor's Mansion. You are not a conservative. You are a R.I.N.O.
