Alabama Senate Race: Moore Takes Lead as Primary Approaches

By Christopher M Peeks March 09, 2026

Congressman Barry Moore has emerged as the front-runner in the race to become Alabama’s next junior Senator. What many once perceived as Attorney General Steve Marshall’s race to lose is now, without question, Moore’s.

If recent polling data from Yellowhammer News is accurate, the state's longest-serving top prosecutor has lost a staggering 20% of his support, falling to 16%. He now trails Moore, who sits at 22%, and is in danger of slipping into third place behind former Navy SEAL Jared Hudson, who holds 12%.

Moore continues to rack up major endorsements from organizations and elected officials following the backing of President Trump. While Marshall maintains support from several entities, he has struggled to match the momentum of his opponent.

Marshall Endorsements (2026 Senate Primary)

  • Industry & Business Associations: Alabama Farmers Federation (ALFA / FarmPAC), Automobile Dealers Association of Alabama, Associated Builders and Contractors of Alabama (ABC), Manufacture Alabama, Alabama Forestry Association.

  • Law Enforcement: Over 50 sheriffs and district attorneys, including Mobile County DA Keith Blackwood, Tuscaloosa Sheriff Rob Abernathy, and Etowah County Sheriff Jonathon Horton.

  • Coalitions & Grassroots: Farmers for Marshall (leaders from 55 counties), County Chairmen for Marshall (47 counties).

  • Elected Officials: Secretary of State Wes Allen and Attorney General candidate Katherine Robertson.

Moore Endorsements

  • Federal Leaders: President Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, U.S. Senators Ted Budd (NC), Tom Cotton (AR), Ted Cruz (TX), Steve Daines (MT), Cynthia Lummis (WY), and Bernie Moreno (OH).

  • U.S. Representatives: Jim Jordan (OH), Andy Biggs (AZ), Tim Burchett (TN), Eli Crane (AZ), Warren Davidson (OH), Bob Good (VA), Marjorie Taylor Greene (GA), Troy Nehls (TX), and Greg Steube (FL).

  • State Leadership: House Majority Leader Nathaniel Ledbetter, Representatives Ed Henry, Dimitri Polizos, Mike Holmes, and former State Senator Bill Hightower.

  • Notable Individuals: Morgan Murphy and Tim Burchett.

  • Industry & Business Associations: Alabama Grocers Association (AGA) and historical support from the Business Council of Alabama (BCA).

  • Advocacy Groups & PACs: Club for Growth PAC, Turning Point Action, Senate Conservatives Fund (SCF), Alabama Republican Assembly, Eagle Forum of Alabama, Alabama First Responders Association, Veterans Leadership Fund / GatorPAC, House Freedom Fund, Republicans for National Renewal, AIPAC, and the American Workers Coalition.

In other news for the Marshall camp, severe weather forced the cancellation of a rally intended to energize his campaign.

Can Marshall turn this around? While the race is far from over, Moore has clearly gained the upper hand. Although Moore has outpaced him in fundraising during the last two cycles, both candidates retain roughly equal cash on hand. According to the latest poll, 47% of voters remain undecided with the May 19 primary approaching. Regardless, Barry Moore is currently viewed as the front-runner to become Alabama's next Senator.
