In a legislative tribute long overdue, the state of Alabama is officially honoring the legendary Bill Baxley for his lifelong accomplishments, including hiring the first Black Assistant Attorney General, Myra Thompson, and reopening the investigation into the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing that led to the eventual prosecution and conviction of Robert Chambliss.

Alabama House Resolution 214, introduced by Representative Christopher England, passed the House on March 10th.

This measure celebrates a career that began with Baxley’s election as the youngest state attorney general in U.S. history. It honors his courageous leadership in righting past wrongs to help shape a more equitable future, his service as the 24th Lieutenant Governor of Alabama, and his dedicated tenure with the National Guard.

Beyond these professional achievements, the document acknowledges his pride in his role as a grandfather, celebrating a figure whose commitment to justice and family has left an indelible mark on the state.

Celebrate the historic legacy of Bill Baxley with Alabama House Resolution 214, introduced by Representative Christopher England. As the Alabama political contributor, Christopher M. Peeks, I am proud to have spearheaded the effort behind this formal legislative recognition of Baxley’s lifelong commitment to justice and public service.
