Ron Sparks: The Bid to Reclaim Alabama’s Agricultural Future

Staff Writer January 28, 2026

In a recent episode of the BCS State of Alabama Podcast, legendary political figure Ron Sparks sat down with hosts Christopher M Peeksand Brandon Moseleyto discuss his decision to come out of retirement and run for Alabama Agriculture Commissioner. Sparks, who previously served in the role from 2003 to 2011, shared a candid look at why he believes the Department of Agriculture needs a seasoned leader to return it to its former strength.

A Call to Action

Sparks noted that his decision to run after 16 years away from the Democratic nomination was not made lightly. He cited concerns over significant budget cuts and the dismantling of key divisions under his successors. Specifically, Sparks highlighted the loss of the law enforcement division, which previously recovered millions in stolen equipment and cattle, and the removal of the gasoline lab—leaving consumers vulnerable at the pump. Protecting Alabama Farmers

Throughout the interview, Sparks emphasized his track record of fighting for local interests:

  • Country of Origin Labeling: Sparks reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring consumers know where their food comes from. [07:07]

  • Combating Foreign Dumping: He discussed his past actions banning chemical-laden catfish imports from Vietnam and China, promising to protect Alabama’s aquaculture from unfair global competition. [11:36]

  • Farmland Preservation: With urban sprawl and foreign entities buying up land, Sparks aims to revive farm preservation acts to keep Alabama’s soil in the hands of its people. [14:33]

Modernizing the Industry

Addressing modern challenges, Sparks touched on the delayed rollout of the medical marijuana program, suggesting it belongs under the Department of Agriculture’s oversight due to existing lab infrastructure. [27:54] He also expressed a desire to revisit the revitalization of the Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery, viewing it as a potential economic engine for the state. [50:43]

A Message of Unity

Sparks closed by lamenting the current state of political division. "We need to get back to the middle," he stated, emphasizing that he has never run a negative ad and intends to work across party lines to hit the ground running on day one. [41:03]
