Deal with Frey Medical Management Saves Greenville Hospital and 100 Jobs

Staff Writer January 24, 2026

GREENVILLE, AL — A last-minute agreement with Frey Medical Management has secured the future of the Regional Medical Center of Central Alabama (RMCCA), averting a massive layoff and the loss of inpatient care in Butler County.

The deal ensures the 72-bed facility remains a full-service hospital. This reverses a previous announcement that would have seen nearly 90 employees laid off as the facility planned to transition to a limited "rural emergency hospital" model due to financial strain.

Strengthening Rural Healthcare

Rodney Walker, a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate and a local businessman, praised the move as a victory for rural Alabama. Walker, who has been active in supporting the deal, noted that the intervention of Frey Medical Management—a firm specializing in revitalizing underperforming rural hospitals—is a model for private-sector solutions.

"This is outstanding news for Greenville and for rural Alabama," Walker said. "They protected jobs, preserved care for families, and showed what responsible leadership looks like."

The potential downsizing had sparked significant concern throughout the region. Under the new agreement:

Inpatient services will be maintained.

Nearly 100 jobs previously scheduled for elimination will be preserved.

Frey Medical Management will take over operations to support long-term growth.

Political Context

Walker, a cattle farmer and businessman from Lineville, is positioning himself as a champion for rural infrastructure and economic stability. "Communities shouldn’t have to choose between economic stability and healthcare," Walker added. "This deal proves that with the right private-sector leadership, we can save jobs and keep essential services close to home."

For the residents of Greenville, the immediate result is clear: the doors stay open, and the staff stays employed.
