Governor Ivey Highlights Davis Family as CHOOSE Act Success Story

Staff Writer January 30, 2026

MONTGOMERY – Governor Kay Ivey wrapped up School Choice Week 2026 by showcasing the Davis family, a homeschooling household in Alabama benefiting from the CHOOSE Act.

Doug and Marinella Davis use the education savings account (ESA) program to support their four adopted children: Riko (12), Hanna (11), Benedict (9), and Bernadette (8). The Davises noted that the funds have transformed their home classroom by providing individual books and updated technology, allowing them to redirect personal funds toward educational field trips.

"Every child deserves an education that fits their needs – and for the Davises, that best choice is homeschooling," Governor Ivey stated.

Key Details for Alabama Families:

Funding: Eligible students in participating schools receive $7,000, while homeschooling families receive $2,000 per student (capped at $4,000 per family).

2026-27 Eligibility: Families with an adjusted gross income (AGI) up to 300% of the federal poverty level.

Universal Access: Starting in the 2027-2028 academic year, the program will open to all Alabama families regardless of income.

Deadline: New and renewing applications must be submitted by March 31, 2026.

Since its launch in January 2025, over 36,000 students across all Alabama counties have applied for the program.
