To understand the weight of the moment, one must recall a viral social media video from a few weeks prior. Montgomery Pastor Jamel Brown gained notoriety after being filmed drinking pickle juice to counteract the effects of alcohol while staying at a local motel. Shortly thereafter, rumors swirled that housekeeping staff discovered a pickle with a condom on it in his room, earning the minister the derogatory nickname "the pickle booty warrior." Brown later fueled the fire by releasing a video addressing his intoxication and the allegations surrounding the discovery.

The tension peaked during the debate when Brown attempted to corner Martin on energy policy, specifically regarding corn and wind power. When the Reverend asked for his solutions, the entrepreneur reached into his podium and brandished a cucumber.
