The Soul of a Statesman vs. The Tactics of a Bully

By Christopher M Peeks January 28, 2026

Earlier this week on the BCS: State of Alabama podcast, former Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks gave one of the all-time great quotes when assessing negative campaigning. The iconic figure said:

"I hate to see politicians pander for the only reason to get re-elected. Have courage, do the right things, and if you get defeated, you get defeated. But go down with a soul, go down with a heart, go down with who you really are—if that’s where you’ve got to go. But don’t say anything just to get elected. Don’t criticize people and put people down just to get elected."

The Alabama Secretary of State, Wes Allen, who is seeking to be the next Lieutenant Governor of the Yellowhammer State, should listen to these words of wisdom. If he did, he would have no campaign to run on.

He has revealed who he really is: a schoolyard bully who lacks courage and "punks out" when confronted. Back in the spring of 2025, in a public spat with John Merrill, he made the erroneous claim that he had to clean up after the former Secretary of State, while also asserting that he made Alabama’s elections the most secure in the nation. In reality, that was Merrill's doing.

Last week, when confronted in the Lieutenant Governor debate by Pastor Dean Odle about voting for the gas tax, Allen refused to respond. Instead, he went after the Reverend for being a "Flat Earther." The dialogue then devolved into a back-and-forth regarding religion, with Allen dodging questions regarding his true conservative principles.

On Friday, before the ink had even dried on John Wahl’s signature during qualifying, Allen launched a social media attack alleging voter misconduct by the Alabama GOP Chairman. Why did he not go after him as the state's Chief Elections Official? Could it be because Wahl was the Chairman of the party and Allen didn’t want to upset the apple cart?

In his post, Allen claimed to support the President in all three elections, even though rumors are flying like helicopters overhead that Allen was a "Never Trumper."

We know why Allen is sounding the alarm bell: not only did Wahl receive the Trump endorsement, but he also raised over a million dollars in a single day. Wes Allen’s campaign is imploding faster than a building demolition. After the May 19th primary, this little fellow will be a forgotten footnote in the history of Alabama politics.
