In a recent episode of the BCS. State of Alabama podcast, hosts Christopher M. Peeks and Brandon Moseley sat down with John Wahl, a prominent Republican candidate for Alabama Lieutenant Governor. Known for his background as a farmer and businessman rather than a career politician, Wahl shared his back-to-basics approach to governing the Yellowhammer State.

A Farmer’s Philosophy in Montgomery

Wahl, who previously served as the Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party, emphasizes his identity as a farm boy from rural North Alabama. He argues that his upbringing taught him the value of hard work and faith—principles he believes are missing from a government often dominated by career insiders.

I’m unapologetically an outsider, Wahl stated during the interview. His platform centers on limited government, lower taxes, and reducing regulations to empower individual Alabamians.

Key Policy Positions: Economy, Infrastructure, and Education

Phasing Out the State Income Tax

One of Wahl’s most ambitious goals is the complete elimination of the Alabama state income tax. Citing conversations with business leaders like Kevin O’Leary, Wahl believes that removing the income tax is the number one thing Alabama can do to spark an economic engine. He proposes a responsible, phased approach over six to eight years to ensure the state remains fiscally sound while becoming more competitive with neighbors like Florida and Tennessee.

Infrastructure Without Tax Hikes

When asked about funding vital projects in Mobile and Huntsville, Wahl’s solution is efficiency over tax increases. He advocates for ensuring all gas tax revenue is strictly used for roads and bridges and suggests cutting government waste, such as taxpayer-funded PSA billboards, to redirect funds toward paving and construction.

Protecting Alabama’s Children

Education and cultural issues are at the forefront of Wahl's campaign. He supports removing woke content from classrooms and returning the focus to reading, writing, arithmetic, and civics. Furthermore, as a member of the State Library Board, he has been a vocal advocate for protecting minors from sexually explicit materials in public spaces.

Standing for Election Integrity

Wahl’s experience as GOP Chairman has made him a staunch supporter of election integrity. He highlighted the need for cleaner voter rolls and more aggressive oversight to prevent practices like ballot harvesting, ensuring that every legal vote in Alabama is counted fairly.

Why John Wahl?

With a field of seven candidates, Wahl encourages voters to look for the last name on the ballot. His message is clear: he isn't running to build a political career, but to return power to the people of Alabama.

This race is about the people of this state and what we can do to make their lives safer, better, and more prosperous, Wahl concluded.
