In the latest Alabama election news the people learned of Auditor Andrew Sorrells ties to a 140 million dollar ponzi scheme run by Brent Frost IV. Sorrell claims to be a victim and I will take him at his word. Though the details of this are really weird, his political action committee making a loan of $29,000 to one of Frosts companies and receiving $71,000 in campaign donations,I have no reason to disbelieve him. I have the utmost confidence Mr Sorrell is an honest man.
Until more details come out, that should have been the end of it, but no. Shortly after, Secretary of State Wes Allen, who is currently seeking the office of Lt. Governor in next year's GOP primary, interjected himself into this foray by telling Sorrell, who is running for Allen's position, to give the donations back.
Um, why? Allen, whose job is to oversee Alabama elections and ensure transparency with voters that Alabama's elections are safe, has no say over donations. The Alabama Ethics Committee and Attorney General is responsible for investigating and holding one accountable for any improprieties. Who made Wes Allen the moral authority?
I don't know if this is a gimmick to try to win support, but Wes Allen needs to stop running his mouth. We already saw him look foolish starting a public spat with former Secretary of State John Merrill a few months ago, leaving him with egg on his face.
Secretary Allen, I think you should focus on your own race. You've got way bigger fish to fry than to concern yourself with who is donating to the Andrew Sorrell campaign.
